Presented here is a gorgeous woodblock by distinguished Japanese-Canadian Naoko Matsubara. Matsubara is celebrated for her distinctive works that draw from both her Japanese heritage and her extensive international experiences. Born in 1937 on Shikoku Island and raised in Kyoto, Matsubara honed her craft through formal studies at the Kyoto Academy of Fine Art and as a Fulbright Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University. Her journey included advanced studies at the Royal College of Art in London and work with influential figures like Fritz Eichenberg.
Available now is a woodblock print titled Winter Pond. This rare artist proof is signed and titled. The print measures 15.5”x14.25” (framed: 23 1/2" x 21 1/2"). Edition of 100. Date: 1971.
Since 1960 Matsubara has had more than 75 solo exhibitions, in the USA, Canada, Japan, England, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland and Mexico. Her work is held in major public institutions worldwide such as the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; the Harvard Art Museum, Cambridge; the British Museum, London; and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
Naoko Matsubara, a solo exhibition featuring some 20 woodcut prints, opens at the Art Gallery of Ontario in July of 2025.
