This intimate study of a child’s face, measuring some 9x11cm (c. 3.5”x4.3”), was drawn by renowned Canadian artist Robert S. Hyndman (1915–2009). Hyndman began his formal art training at the Central Technical Institute in Toronto in 1934. After graduation, he moved to London to do post graduate studies at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. He decided to stay on in England and do freelance work as an illustrator of children's books. The drawing possibly dates from this time.
In 1944, Hyndman was appointed an Official War Artist with a studio in London. During a period of one and a half years he created 68 paintings. Hyndman’s work can be found in many private and public collections in England, the United States and throughout Canada including at the House of Commons and the Canadian War Museum.
