
A large-format portrait by photographer Emil Otto Hoppé of the celebrated author, poet, and journalist Rudyard Kipling, widely regarded as one of the most prominent literary figures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This evocative photogravure, dated 1912, captures Kipling in profile. A similar image is housed in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
The photograph is signed and numbered, with a stamp on the verso reading: "R. Dogana of Torino / Officio Visite." It is printed on a larger sheet, matted, and presented inside a mat. Dimensions: Print – 29 x 24.5 cm; Sheet – 49 x 37 cm; Mat – 51 x 40.5 cm. The piece is in generally good condition, though there are various imperfections (refer to images for details).
Emil Otto Hoppé (1878–1972) was one of the most influential art and documentary photographers of the modern era, whose artistic success paralleled that of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Walker Evans.
