Original lithograph by French artist Eugène Carrière (1849 – 1906). The colour poster, dating from 1898, advertises the inaugural issue of the French socialist newspaper L'Aurore.
This design for the poster was executed in both large and smaller formats; the one here was intended for the interiors of bookshops and cafes. Copies of the large format lithograph can be found in several collection including that of the National Gallery of Canada (18453), the Victoria and Albert Museum (E.3294-1932) and the Blanton Museum of Art (G1970.5.23). A copy of the smaller version can be found in the collection of the Musée de Bretagne (2011.0058.3).
