This striking photograph, measuring 14”x21”, shows a close-up of the rough and calloused hand of a fishermen. The image is part of Johan Hallberg Campbell’s ongoing series called ‘Scalpay: Last of the Fishermen’ – a documentation of a remote island of the Hebrides in Scotland.
Campbell was born in the Highlands of Scotland and has been living and working in Canada since 2007. Graduating with a BA (Hons) from the Glasgow School of Art in 2002, he specializes in both photography and film.
Campbell’s work can be found in numerous publications including National Geographic, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, The Walrus, The Globe and Mail and The Guardian. This specific photograph was published in a number of magazines including The Scots Magazine—one of the oldest print publications in the world.
