Gorgeous lithograph of seashore and mountain scene by Canadian artist Henri Masson (1907-1996). The loose linework and rich colours, as seen here, are typical of Masson’s style. Titled ‘Le pays magique’, the lithograph includes an excerpt from poet Claude Péloquin at the bottom of the print: “La montagne la mer ingrédients pour des cœurs grands” [“The mountains, the sea; ingredients for full hearts”].” Presented here is an HC (hors de commerce) proof destined for promotional use, most commonly used as a sample for galleries or dealers.

The rare lithograph is signed at bottom right and dates from 1985. This piece is beautifully framed (25.5”x29”/65x74cm) and ready to hang on any of your walls.

Largely self-taught, Henri Masson combined his narrative abilities with a fluid Group of Seven style. He lived in Ottawa, Ontario, from 1921 and began exhibiting nationally in 1938 and internationally in 1946. His themes reflect his belief in the unity of nature and art. Cityscapes and landscapes reveal a sense of place and time. Masson used a loose, vigorous brush style in many media. His best works are full of detail and movement. Masson’s works are held in major Canadian collections including the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec.

Collection of Things also offers this beautiful drawing by Masson.
