Hand coloured engraving of the Ottawa Locks by William Henry Bartlett from 1841. The print shows the steamboat Shannon near Bytown’s wharf and storehouse. The Commissariat Building, now the Bytown Museum, is visible along the locks with the Sappers’ bridge in the background. Colonel By’s residence afnd Barracks Hill are also visible nearby.
Bartlett's Canadian prints were originally published in Nathaniel P. Willis' Canadian Scenery, published in London in 1840 and republished in several editions thereafter. Most first editions have only English captions while subsequent editions have tri-lingual captions.
