Born in Budapest, Hungary, Ernst Neumann came to Canada with his parents at the age of five. Following high school, Neumann began his artistic studies at both the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and the Art Association of Montreal. At the latter, he met and studied with Canadian painter and engraver Edwin Holgate, renowned in the Montreal art scene at that time. Holgate was responsible for cultivating Neumann’s interest in and enthusiasm for wood engraving and printmaking.
Neumann’s work can be found in a number of public collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, the McCord Museum, Montreal, and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Quebec.
