Executed in Barbara Kruger’s signature graphic style, Untitled (Flag), Bandana presents a field of bold red, white and blue typography arranged in the visual language of the American flag. The work consists of a series of pointed questions concerning freedom, pride, belonging, authority and collective identity, rendered in Kruger’s characteristically bold typography. By translating her text-based practice onto a utilitarian bandana, Kruger collapses the distinction between art object, political statement and everyday object. Produced as part of Artists Band Together project in 2020, the work reflects the heightened social and political discourse of the period while retaining the immediacy and accessibility central to Kruger’s practice. The piece, measuring 21½ × 21½ in. (55 × 55 cm), is in excellent condition. It is stored rolled and will be shipped in sturdy tube.
